WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THERE WERE NO LEAP YEARS? | Draw My Life

The Olympic Games, the FIFA World Cup… surely
you already knew that these events are held every four years. But to that list, we must
add an event that goes much more unnoticed, but it’s as important as the mentioned before:
leap years. And 2020 is one! This means that February, instead of 28 days, will have one
more, 29. But, have you ever wondered why this happens? As we all know, our planet takes 365 days
to make a complete turn around the sun. But what we may not know is that they are not
exactly 365 days, but each year we don’t count 5 hours, 48 minutes and 56 seconds. That is,
about six hours. It may not seem like much, but if year after
year, we add up all those hours, after four years, we will have lost a full day! Precisely,
the time we make up by adding one more day to February. The person responsible for this measure was
the famous Roman emperor Julius Caesar in the year 46 BC. It was in his Julian calendar
where he corrected those extra hours with the inclusion of leap years, adding them to
February as it was back then the last month of the year. And so on until today. In fact, if he hadn’t added that day, we would
still be in 2019 right now, one year less! And if we advanced hundreds of years, there
would come a time when the seasons would be reversed, so that we would celebrate Christmas
in midsummer in the northern hemisphere, and the other way around in the southern hemisphere. But the solution to something as complex as
Earth’s translational movement wasn’t going to be that easy! As we said, every year, we
stop counting about 6 hours that we then recover every four years… but if you have paid attention,
you will have seen that they aren’t exactly 6 hours either. Those eleven minutes that we add up, after
many, many years will come to form a day. That is why in certain years, the leap year
is “skipped”, to compensate for this lag again. As for example, the year 1900 didn’t have
an extra day in February, and the next 2100 won’t have it either. Finally, a curious fact that many of you will
probably be wondering! When do you think a person born on February 29 celebrates their
birthday? Every four years? Does this mean that they will be a minor for decades? There’s
a simple solution for that: it’s usual for the person to choose to celebrate their birthday
the day before or the day after, that is, on February 28th or March 1st. And you, tiktakers?
Do you know of anyone who has their birthday on this special date?
