The Children’s Theatre’s MADAGASCAR – A Musical Adventure!

I’m Aubrey Berg. I’m Chair of the Musical Theatre program at
CCM. I used to do quite a lot of Theatre for Young
Audiences but having taken over the Musical Theatre at CCM most of my work in the past
30 years has been directing musicals. But it is fun to come back to Children’s Theatre
with such a lively show as Madagascar. Of course Madagascar is based on an animated
cartoon. I think the first thing that I said is that
I didn’t want a bunch of actors in animal costumes. The Animals are dressed as human beings. And the humans are cartoons. These animals go on a really exciting adventure. They leave the safety of the Central Park
Zoo in New York City and they travel thousands of miles to the wilds of Madagascar. King Julien, the King of the Lemurs, he is
such a crazy, funny character, and I think he certainly has the best song in the show
which is Move It. It’s hard to sit in the rehearsal room and
not kind of bop around to the music when that comes on. And yes, in the curtain call we are going
to encourage everybody in the theater to get to their feet and move it move it. I think the show has a very nice message. It says be true to yourself, whatever your
species is, it says have great respect for the “animals” around you. And it says when there are problems to be
faced they can only really be resolved if everybody works together towards a common
end. And I think those are really important things
to remember. Come see the show. There are many happy surprises along the way.
