Seriously: The Cartoon Interview

Seriously: The Cartoon Interview

This week “The Cartoon interview.” This is
Seriously Seven Days. Hello I’m your host Bryan Parmelee. On internets and newsstands now is our annual cartoon issue. That’s where we invite cartoonists
to help us tell the Vermont news. In honor of that I thought it’d be a pretty
good idea to hang out with one of these cartoonists, and I noticed that there is
someone named Rachel who lives here now so let’s drop by for a chat shall we? Could I have a little help here, please? thank you. Thank you for joining
us. I’m here with Rachel Lindsay who is a cartoonist and also the first-ever guest
on Seriously Seven Days. You must be incredibly honored I am. Thank you, Bryan. Of
course. So you have a weekly comic strip in Seven Days called “Rachel Lives Here Now” right? What’s that all about? Well it’s about me or at least a version of me and
my experiences here in Burlington and in Vermont and a little bit about my
community and I also have a character in there named Weston. That’s me! Oh I didn’t know that you were home. Yeah, you know, just getting stoned in my room. The usual. Did you
you guys want a rip? I’m actually working right now. Yeah, Wes, we’ll we’ll talk later. Suit yourselves. Later! anyway does it ever
feel limiting to have to do Vermont-centric humor, or is that like a
bottomless supply of silliness? Well there is a lot of silliness but I
definitely kind of hit a wall after one or two years of doing the strip where I
no longer had fresh eyes on the state and my experiences. So I had to dig a
little bit deeper, but it’s always nice to have Weston around for
a simple punchline. Who you calling simple? That’s not what I meant. Is this seriously
how it’s going to be, man? I’m kinda trying to film the show here. My bad. Not trying to harsh the vibe So for the annual Cartoon Issue though you do something a little bit different right? It’s not your usual strip? Yeah the cartoon issue is all news stories that are comics and so they’re
in comic form and it’s a full page and this year I did mine about “Running
with Artemis,” which is a course that I took. It’s a trail running in archery
course. It’s all women and it was a really awesome experience from you is a
great chance to be able to cover it in the issue and it’s also nice just to
have a break from my my regular strip and my characters. That was a real missed
opportunity to have me in their, Rach. It was an all-female course there’s no way
that you could have been a part of it. Well I think the white male perspective
is really important. Am I right brother? So this is the fourth time you’ve done the Cartoon Issue right? Was there anything different
this time around? Well in the past I’ve been paired up
with a journalist and this time I got to write and draw it. But it’s interesting
because when you work with a journalist you know they’re used to just writing and
words are so precious to them. And cartoonists are used to blending words
and pictures to tell the story. So getting the balance right and getting
people to feel comfortable with that balance can be kind of tough but, you
know, I just have to convince them that visuals can do a lot of heavy lifting. Yeah, it must be pretty uplifting to draw this mug. Alright, dude. This is really
starting to get pretty disruptive. This is my first interview and you’re
ruining it, alright? my bad Bry My bad, Bry. So anyway, what do you have in
store next? Getting stoned with me! Dude, come on. I mean he’s probably right. But… I am working on a graphic novel right now
and do in September and it’s coming out in September 2018, so hopefully I’ll
finish in tim— Actually I took the liberty of writing myself into Chapter four Alright, this is getting ridiculous. I mean, you created this guys! Is there nothing
you can do about this? Well uh, come to think of it… Seriously?! Where was that two minutes ago? My bad. Hope I didn’t ruin your first
interview. That’s that’s gonna do it for us this week. This is Rachel Lindsay, cartoonist. Thank you so much for watching.
