Preparing For Art Exhibitions

Preparing For Art Exhibitions

hey guys Scott down ocean artist here just with a quick update I get asked quite often what my day and my schedule sort of sort of looks like as an artist and for the most part I think people are just interested in you know what artists do sort of behind the scenes but I think some people sort of wonder if I actually work or if artists sort of work at all the being an artist is more than just painting there's there's a lot to it you're you're running and macro business it's a macro business which requires business skills wouldn't sound the best business person around but you know I've got some savvy enough to be able to make a living off this most days will consist of a painting at least one or two hours if required eighteen hours I'll go all through the night to get done whatever needs to get done but like I said there's more more than being an artist to just paintings so one of the other things constantly liaison with people galleries moving artworks around so logistics reaching out to new galleries for representation or for exhibitions there's competition applications communicating with collectors and potential clients what else is there talking with people who want to do workshops at their workshops as well writing blogs doing interviews exhibition proposals networking marketing social media doing in taxes and books you know the boring stuff promotion and branding website maintenance I do all that stuff on their website artwork listings on third-party websites all that sort of stuff there's a lot more than probably forgetting right now but yeah I do all of that on my own so here is today's to-do list I'm sure if you can see that so it's quite long yesterday's was just as long and tomorrow's won't be the reason for that is is I'm getting ready for an exhibition on the Gold Coast tomorrow so I'll take you through what's going to happen today and that sort of gives you an insight into some days it's not a typical day but definitely some days this is this is what happens it's kind of necessary right so I got to sleep after 4:00 a.m. it's probably quarter past twenty past mum can attest to that we were texting messaging on Facebook I could fly past 4:00 in the morning it was something really cuz I mum got up at 7:30 ish so three and a half hours sleep three hours sleep and this list will what I need to get done take me through to about two or three a.m. tonight so it's going to be a big day it's been a big few days it's Sunday morning nine ish I think I ate 30 ish I'll put them up on the screen and I haven't gotten a bed before 3:00 a.m. since I think maybe Thursday night maybe Wednesday night just preparing for this so that preparing for an exhibition isn't just you know a single day thing or an afternoon or an evening or whatever it's you know several days excluding the painting the painting processes is a whole other kettle of fish right so this is what I call my hustle it's not exactly a garyvee hustle or anything like that it but it's mine it's my art my day we art house all this is sort of how I get done what I need to get done you know working hard smart fast to succeed in the industry that you know will spit out 99.9% of people that try and succeed in it okay so I'll run you through quickly what's got what's going to happen today so yet yesterday no sorry Friday I sent five paintings to Victoria to a new gallery that's going to represent me so details about that in the coming days that's really cool today I've got seven paintings going to this exhibition on the Gold Coast and here's a couple of them so the big ones I've got four they're already packaged the big ones are packaged and I've got to do the little ones now only because I didn't do them last night because there was so I had to photograph a couple of the small ones so here's one of the smaller ones and there's a couple more over here I should probably tell my phone off damn what's next on my list I have varnished them so I give every painting a spray varnish like a satin varnish it gives it a nice a nice effect and also protects the painting obviously then I have to name them sometimes that's a bit of a process in itself as some of you know I named my paintings after s'long lyrics so if I don't have something in mind already then I've got to go a bit through a bit of a process to find something that that suits what else so I've got to finish the back so that means putting the hangers on name painting details contact details a few other things that's all I'm gonna make another video about that because that's that's quite a big process in itself per painting and I think some people be interested in the way that I actually finish off a painting ready for display or for a collector you know I knew a new collector that sort of thing it yeah there's there's a few little Easter eggs in there for for some people and for the person receiving the painting really and so I'll take you through that process separately what else have I got to do so they need to add the paintings to my registry so I've got a I've got a registry just a Excel thing in Google Docs of every painting that I've done you know it's title when it was finished its price retail price Commission's where it sold if it if it has sold where it's sold which gallery was a commissioned who bought it their contact details all that sort of stuff just for my records then I have to finish packaging them so I'll wrap them up in some some foam of some sort I've got I've rip some foam and some more bubble wrap and then put them in the wagon ready to go to the Gold Coast before I take them to the Gold Coast though I have to get the paperwork sorted for the exhibitions so that's the next thing on the list is contracts and legal stuff the painting details for the galleries so that they know what to put on the little display things so the name of the painting the size the medium there's a few other things there I then it's the five hour round trip to the Gold Coast providing the traffic is okay to ish hours there – ish hours back and the time in-between obviously at the gallery and then I got a leg it back okay and I need to leg it back because I need to get the paperwork and contract stuff painting details to the gala yeah to the gallery and Victoria this and the paintings off – yes sorry Friday yes so that and that's you know and an hour or two on its own a little bit of a process that'll take me to around sunset dinner time hopefully if I don't think it's I think it's really going to be any good but if the conditions are okay I'll go have a look see if I can sneak in a a cheeky surf for half an hour up on the point grab the longboard and go for a surf not looking good this time of year what next so once once all that's done maybe get a surfing I'll edit a couple of videos including this one I've got some more come in and I'm getting into a lot more more video as well then I have to continue writing an exhibition proposal submission for next year something that's happening next year with that there's a grant that's sort of attached to it because it's a pretty big job so all the details about that will be out well once it goes through if it goes through so that's pretty exciting then that kind of that man submissions is you know it's a long process as well it's updating your CV it's writing a detailed exhibition curatorial rationale which is annoying in itself I'm not annoying you know lengthy process and some other stuff specific to you know other bits and bobs specific to that that exhibition or the event or whatever is happening and that'll take me all night so through to the two or three am guessing around there anyway yeah so that's a day of setting up for an exhibition which doesn't happen all that often but this is how much I try and fit into a day so and that's before any normal stuff so eighteen or being a good housemate and you know doing the dishes and and mowing the lawn and all that sort of stuff you know the good things socializing surfing and karate training which I don't get to nearly enough simply because on I've got days like this quite often what asks photography my non-existent dad in life yeah so it's not easy but it is necessary to just exceed us if there's anything else on this list there isn't I don't think yeah don't get me wrong it's um it's not like this like I said it's not like this absolutely every day and and I do like my children my hanging time you know go for a surf for a few hours go climbing mountain go hang out with friends hanging out at the beach whatever it might be good traveling play with play with the dog you know take him down to the beach I'll you know I'll take him down the beach most most days yeah but that's that so I had better start doing rather than talking otherwise I'll never get it done yeah so that's it peace love to respect its got denim ocean artists so for my new viewers on YouTube don't forget to subscribe there's going to be a lot more videos just you know daily stuff as an artist take you behind the scenes of me actually painting of you know exhibitions and opening nights and and just you know liaison with galleries that sort of thing just documenting my my journey it's pretty cool yeah so join along and also new paintings so this is where I'll be showing off a lot of new paintings as well now
