I Can’t Get to You – Music Video Project by Speaking Up

I’m Hannah, I’m a member of
People First Dorset’s Speaking Up Groups and
we’ve been talking about things that matter to us. I needed some help toperhaps someone to
help me to find a job
You know like,
handle an interview
and ask the right questions.People like I’ve dealt with
in the past have like…
bullied meand made fun of meand I think it’s important
to get the message across
that bullying’s wrong.I find it hard to
see my boyfriend.
Going up to a till in a shop
can also be a big struggle because it’s communicating when, sometimes I have trouble
communicating with people. And I need some help with the
money, like bills and that.
We thought a great way of
breaking down barriers
was to do a music
video by our members.
In a lot of music videos
it tells a story and in this particular one it
will tell the story of our struggles in everyday life. My name’s Gary from
Pageant Productions. I’m a filmmaker based in
Dorchester in Dorset. In the Spring of 2018, I worked on a project to
produce a music video. My name’s Ki Shaw. I work for
Activate Performing Arts
and I’m the Producer in Youth
Dance and Diversity.
The Project was a collaboration
between People First Dorset,
Activate’s Performing ArtsRemix Groupsand Weymouth College. We worked with artists Andy
Cleeton and Gary Jarman
who were the producers of and
the creation process
of the music and the film.We started the project with a
series of workshops, to come up with ideas,
discuss experiences create lyrics, dance moves that
they’d like to incorporate in the videoWell I got involved at
the workshop stage.
I expected the barriers to be
access to places, transport…
But it seemed to be more
about peoples attitudes
and the resulting feelings of
isolation and loneliness.
As part of the creative
process, we got
all the participants in here
with a microphone
and I recorded them all
expressing their views.
Some wanted to sing, others
just wanted to talk.
Again that was used to helpcraft the final
lyrics of the song.
This music video will helpcolleges, schools and everythingelse in the community.I think it’s important that
we try to spread the word
about all the problems
people like me
and the rest of the people
doing this video have.
My worst experience is
when people ignore me.
My problem was meetingsand me not being included of discussions of my future. We didn’t want it to
just be negative. We wanted to show how some of these things
could be easily solved with just a little bit of a change in attitude, or a little bit of support from
people within the community. And I think we’ve done that and
I’m really looking forward to to people seeing it. One of the boys
was talking about
walking up steps
with no handrails
and he found it very difficult. And somebody else was
talking about the attitude
of bus drivers.Well, I haven’t been on a bussince I was in my wheelchairbecause I’m frightened to.I was like a zombie, sitting
down watching television
all day and doing nothing. Not all disabilities are visualor at least seen
at first glance.
Therefore, this will help you
to understand and hopefully
be more understanding and
then make allowances.
I just hope more
people will listen,
more people will take
notice of what we are saying
The overall message is to get
disability people heard.
#MUSIC When I’m in my room,
watching TV and dreaming oh My journey should be clear for me, but there’s so many
different barriers and things you can’t see. No matter what I do,
no matter what I say, just try to understand,
that I just want to say I can’t get to you, no matter what I do, just don’t want to leave you on your own. I can’t get through to you, no matter I try, so many different
reasons you’re alone. Do you think that you would
like to try and travel in a world that’s not
been made for you? You can’t get to
wherever you want, there’s so little time it
seems to think of us all. Each time you put me down I
wish it didn’t hurt me, but I’ve got feelings too. Don’t be ignorant, show
a little patience. I shouldn’t have to hide my face cause you think I’m different. Call yourself caring? Well stop all your staring! If you could listen you’ll
see we’re the same. I can’t get to you no matter what I do, just don’t want to be
left on my own. I can’t get to you, no matter what I do. I can’t get through to you, so many different reasons. Each time you put me down I wish it didn’t hurt me, cos I’m a human too. The way people look at
you in the streets, or when you get up on the
bus, try to get a seat. You should spend some time
living in my shoes, you should realise
what I go through. No matter what I do, no matter what I say, just try to understand that
I just want to say. I can’t get through to you, no matter I try. So many different reasons you’re alone. Each time you put me down I wish it didn’t hurt me. Don’t be ignorant, show a little patience. I can’t get through to you No matter I try, so many different reasons you’re alone.
