Engineering is Creativity

Engineering is Creativity

I remember back in the mid eighties when I was working on the upgrade to the f16 aircraft The day came where I had to go to Ames Research Center in California where I discovered there was 200 people working on the f16… I was like how do we do this How is this coordinated? This is crazy How does the f16 actually work… all these people. I think that was the first time I began to realize that engineering was just more than technology my name is Colin Drummond and i’m a professor of biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University. What ever you propose what ever you propose… if the FDA decides it’s a medical device Guess what… it better be subordinate all software development to that… ok that’s important I’m a mechanical engineer by training but like most people we don’t always know what we want to do when we’re young and so we have to do is figure out how to take what we’ve learned and learn new things in my case I took my passion for mechanical engineering and devices and overtime found that I enjoyed working in the area of biomedical engineering we’ve heard that country needs more engineers… the country needs more entrepreneurs I think that can be misleading from one sense I would say yes, we need people with more analytic training We need people that understand the discipline of thinking through problems We need people that understand the discipline of innovation I think engineering degrees are wonderful way to begin that journey and to go in that direction but the degree doesn’t define a person. When it does usually that person is it’s a terminal degree and they stop learning and stop growing but we do need are those people that use the engineering degree as a pathway to develop a discipline for thinking a discipline for creativity that can serve them for years and years into the future The truth of the matter is if you just want to be somebody who does calculations they’re a dime a dozen they’re a dime a dozen you will never accomplish that the financial reward that you might think you you deserve the real value comes in those people that can be curious deal with problems we don’t even know exists today and are willing to take that risk and and go out there and and define a future and be curious
