ART 20L – Introduction to Drawing – Grant Whipple – UCSC

[MUSIC PLAYING] Are you seeing this? Are you seeing the world
through the eyes of an artist? With a slight change
in perspective and some time behind the
drawing board, you will. This course will
introduce the fundamentals of drawing through specific
concepts and techniques that will change the way
you perceive the world and help you become immersed
in artistic visual experience. Whether you want to make
drawings to visualize an idea, hone your perceptual skills,
or focus on self-expression, a foundation in drawing
will unlock your vision. Observation will be
the starting point to progress through the
topics of line, volume, value, perspective, invention,
and composition. The drawing strategies
of the Renaissance to contemporary period will
inform our ways of seeing. We will use perceptual drawing
approaches, such as sighting and measuring, to structure and
nurture the creative process, and commune online to
share our investigations. Even in today’s fast-paced
world, drawing by hand on paper is the most accessible,
immediate, and diverse method of artistic expression. We will be learning to
slow down and practice articulated looking while
the world whizzes by. If you have ever wanted to
spend more time drawing, now is the time.
